Andrew Jackson Jihad and Jeffrey Lewis Join Tallahassee Turns Ten
We are extremely lucky to get to contribute to Tallahassee Turns Ten, a covers album made in tribute to the first Mountain Goats album I (Sean) ever heard. I remember it like it was yesterday. Some time in 2005, my girlfriend told me that she had heard a band that reminded her of a smarter, better version of my band. This band was the Mountain Goats. We went to Zia Records together and I found Tallahassee. Mountain Goats fever struck our group of friends and has been plaguing us ever since.
Ben and I have gotten to see the Mountain Goats 4 times, once accompanied by the amazing Peter Hughes, once with Franklin Bruno on piano, and twice solo at the Harvest of Hope and Plan-it-X fest respectively. The latter occasion was amazing, JD had such a grip on the audience (600 people!) that he unplugged his guitar and finished the set without amplification.
I’m sure it can go without saying that The Mountain Goats have inspired us. We have learned many things from this music, and have become a better band by taking note of how John Darnielle conducts himself. Good style. Always classy. Jovial yet firm.
The guy on the right half of the picture is Jeffrey Lewis, another tremendous songwriter. I have had the pleasure of seeing him play twice now, and I believe in him. He is one of the good guys, as my grandfather would say.
thanks for reading! read below to find out more about this awesome project. :-)

Andrew Jackson Jihad and Jeffrey Lewis Join Tallahassee Turns Ten
Phoenix band Andrew Jackson Jihad are known nationwide for their energetic folk-punk and their DIY work ethic. Jeffrey Lewis has been praised by Will Oldham, Jens Lekman, and Jarvis Cocker for his songwriting, especially his literate, often absurd lyrics. In 2008, Lewis illustrated a “comic book press kit” for The Mountain Goats’ album Heretic Pride. Both are now a part of Tallahassee Turns Ten.
Jeffrey Lewis will be covering “See America Right” and Andrew Jackson Jihad will tackle “Alpha Rats Nest”. Anyone else excited about this? If you haven’t already, you can back the kickstarter here. Just $5 will get you a digital download of the whole thing.

YOU ARE AS SOFT AS A CLOUD WRAPPED IN SILK. I WANT TO MARRY YOU. WILL YOU MARRY ME?
I’M LISTENING, AND I’M REALLY REALLY CONSIDERING IT, BUT THAT WOMAN JUST THREW THE PICKLE OFF HER HAMBURGER.
JUST LET ME HOLD YOU FOR ANOTHER MINUTE. OR FOREVER, BECAUSE I LOVE YOU.
I LOVE YOU TOO. I REALLY DO. BUT IT’S A PICKLE. JUST SITTING THERE ON THE GROUND.

Majestic Circumzenithal Arcs

A smiling rainbow

The circumzenithal arc, CZA, is the most beautiful of all the halos. The first sighting is always a surprise, an ethereal rainbow fled from its watery origins and wrapped improbably about the zenith. It is often described as an “upside down rainbow” by first timers. Someone also charmingly likened it to “a grin in the sky”.

Look straight up near to the zenith when the sun if fairly low and especially if sundogs are visible. The centre of the bow always sunwards and red is on the outside.

Record High Poll Numbers of the Day: According to a new Gallup poll published today, 50% of American are in favor of legalizing marijuana, marking the first time more people were for legalization than were against it since Gallup started asking the question in 1969.
To compare, in the first poll to feature the question, only 12% of respondents favored legalization.
Support has climbed steadily since, surpassing 40 percent for the first time just two years ago. According to the poll numbers, legalization support is highest in the West, where 55% favor it. Similarly, liberals (69%), young people (62%), and men (55%) outnumbered their demographic counterparts.
Medical marijuana is currently legal in 16 states, and 16.7 million Americans 12 or older admitted to using the drug in a 2009 federal survey — a number that has risen every year since 2002.
“It’s very hard to argue on a medical basis that herbal cannabis or marijuana is more dangerous than alcohol,” said Cannibanomics author Dr. Christopher Glenn Fichtner. “The idea is that regulation offers the opportunity to improve the safety and reliability of access to specific products.”
